This year, your taxes are likely going to look a little different than they normally do. Last year, a lot of new programs were created to help small businesses. This means you’re most likely going to deal with situations you’ve never seen before including forgiven loans, grants, and unemployment benefits.

The Economic Aid Act passed on December 27, 2020 also extended the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) created under the CARES Act to include employers that received PPP loans, so any employer meeting ERTC eligibility criteria can now benefit.

Join us for this week’s Eastside Recovery Hub Webinar featuring representatives from the IRS and Falco Sult to learn more about how the different programs will impact your business taxes.

On January 28, Governor Inslee announced King County and the Puget Sound Region will move to Phase 2 of the state’s Healthy Washington – Roadmap to Recovery plan on Monday, Feb. 1. based on new criteria that requires regions meet three of the state’s four metrics. Read the Governor’s announcement here.

Phase 2 allows for additional indoor activities, including dining, fitness, museums and more at 25 percent capacity.  As we face new more contagious COVID-19 variants, we must stay as vigilant as ever to keep businesses open and COVID activity trending down. In addition to wearing well-fitted masks and social distancing, Public Health—Seattle & King County encourages businesses and facilities operating indoors to prioritize ventilation and air flow, in addition to outdoor, takeout and curbside offerings. For activities and gatherings allowed in Phase 2 that require advanced planning, such as wedding and funeral receptions, keep in mind that the state will evaluate our region’s status every two weeks and can move us back to Phase 1, if we aren’t meeting their criteria.

King County is hosting an open meeting to discuss questions that are coming up with this change. Please feel free to join us on Zoom:

Making Social Media Accessible for People with Disabilities

Social media platforms are great tools for sharing information directly with consumers, including COVID-19 guidance that people can use to protect themselves, their families, households, and their communities. However, if social media content is not accessible or does not take the needs of people with disabilities in mind, then access to important information is missed.

In this webinar, skilled users of social media with accessibility expertise will discuss the impact of using social media to reach a variety of audiences within the disability community. Previous research has suggested that these social media platforms may have a greater likelihood of being used to share vital health information related to COVID-19. Presenters will also demonstrate how to make shared information more accessible on frequently used platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok to reach the largest possible number of people.

Presenters
Danny Housley and Tori Hughes, Tools for Life | Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation | Georgia Tech

John Rempel, Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation | Georgia Tech

Executive Speaker Series: Road to Recovery – Arts and Culture

Arts and cultural organizations in our region have been hard hit by the economic impacts of COVID-19, since they have been unable to safely perform or gather patrons in their spaces. At the start of the pandemic in March, unemployment claims in the arts and culture sector increased by over 2,000%, and it is estimated that our local organizations will lose tens of millions of dollars this year.

But there is hope ahead, with updated guidance for museum openings and virtual options from arts organizations that are getting creative around their upcoming seasons. Hear from our panel on how they are reimagining their spaces and their performances, and what you can do to support our larger institutions as well as smaller venues and artists.
